We have adored this brand since we started nursery planning years ago. And of course. We had to have a little Tellkiddo in our home. Uh huh.
Maria is the creative superstar behind the brand. A Swedish beauty living in Gotland, a beautiful island in the Baltic Sea and Mama to two-and-a-half year old Sam and 11 month old Micha. She is a true inspiration. A total talent. And someone we admire for oh-so many reasons.
We were so lucky to have a chat to Maria about all things business. She shares the biggest lesson she learnt along the way. How it all began. And how she manages the mum life work life balance.
WE ADORE YOUR BUSINESS TELLKIDDO. WE HAVE ADMIRED FROM AFAR FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. AND WE HAVE LOVED WATCHING YOUR BUSINESS GROW. SUCCEED. AND POP UP IN HOMES ALL OVER THE WORLD. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT HOW IT ALL BEGAN.
I have always painted, since I was a little child I have created birthday cards, small gift decorations etc. So when Sam was born I also found some new time to start painting again. And during this time I realised I did not want to go back to my ordinary work as a project leader at a media agency.
I wanted to create a job so I could have the family in the centre and the job around, not the other way around. Basically I wanted to be able to pick my own working hours. So with my three experiences, being creative, my skills as a project leader and Sam as an inspiration I started to do these storage solutions.
THROUGHOUT YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT SO FAR IS.
To be my own boss is something new and exciting and it’s a lesson I’m learning every day. I always struggle with finding good goals, big and small, realistic and challenging. Not to put too much pressure on myself, I think that I’m to myself the hardest boss I ever had. Never satisfied or giving cred for the job I have done. I try to sometimes stop and look back and point out what I have done for myself.
AND WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST BUSINESS HURDLE.
This far it has been the decision of taking the business to the next level. I have now run Tellkiddo for 2 years and the first 6 months I painted all my products by hand (2,000 paper bags). But when the time was not on my side anymore, I could not keep up with the demand of the products, I had to take the production outside our home.
That was hard emotionally as I was so attached to my products and also hard business wise. But now 1.5 years later it was the best thing to do to be able to do more products and develop the company.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WANTING TO START THERE OWN SMALL BUSINESS.
Believe in yourself, do your own thing, sometimes step away from social media, glossy magazines and find your own passion and drive. Talented people don't need to worry so much, but we all have to go through it sometimes, but the best thing to remember is that everyone is unique and follow your heart.
WE ALL STRUGGLE WITH THE JUGGLE. THE MUM LIFE WORK LIFE JUGGLE. HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE BALANCE.
Sometimes I really don’t, trust me its days everything is chaos and balance is long gone. But we moved closer to my parents, to get some help with the kids. I have very loving parents helping me along the way, supporting and believing in what I do. When I started Tellkiddo I lived very far away from them, but when we were getting our second child I realised that this life I have created, running a company with two kids will not be possible without any support. It’s nice to have someone to run to when you see that chaos coming. Thank you Mom and Dad, love you!
AND WHAT IS PLANNED FOR TELLKIDDO'S FUTURE.
Haha at the moment I don’t know, am I allowed to say that? It’s interesting to run Tellkiddo, I'm never sure whats coming, the only thing I know is that Tellkiddo is built on passion and hard work and that drive is growing stronger and stronger every day and every business opportunity I get I look at with more passion and drive. So I guess the answer to this question is, please follow us and see what’s next, see how it goes!
