LITTLE RAE PRINTS

Summer had so much love for her first baby. But a few months after Annabel was born. Like a lot of new Mums, she realised she needed something for her. Something to channel her creativity. And something she could do at home while raising her babes.

She started up her 'hobby' of painting. Little did she know. Her hobby would become such a successful business. Two years on. And two babies. Summer is rocking the small business world. Sharing the love and the magic in oh-so many rooms.

Summer shares her story. How she manages the mum-life work-life juggle. Her biggest business hurdle. And what is planned for the future.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS, LITTLE RAE PRINTS.
Little Rae Prints are original prints from my watercolour paintings. My artwork is really about creating that space been reality and dreams - encouraging the magic that comes to children so easily, letting them be little. The Little Rae Prints brand is about wanting to enable mothers to create affordable spaces for their children that feel luxurious, beautiful, and in turn, give some degree of extra comfort - in the late hours, the early hours and the in between hours spent tending to their little ones needs.

MY ARTWORK IS REALLY ABOUT CREATING THAT SPACE BETWEEN REALITY AND DREAMS

HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE MUM LIFE WORK LIFE BALANCE.
Establishing set hours have been key to maintaining balance in my home, allowing me to give my children 100% of myself as a mum without the distraction of work. Annabel (2) is in daycare two days per week. However, as I have a very young baby, my work right now revolves around her ever-changing sleep routine and feeding demands and because of the unpredictability of having a young family, it is also important for me to have a degree of flexibility to ensure I’m able to be productive (cue late nights/ early mornings). I also have a fantastic team in place who manage the day to day aspects of Little Rae Prints, allowing me to pursue the creative side.

THROUGHOUT YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT SO FAR IS.
I tried for a long time to do everything by myself. It started to encroach on my precious family time.  Stepping back and focusing on what I was great at and enjoyed doing was a pivotal point in realising that in order to grow, I needed help. I learnt that you can’t do it all, you have to play to your strengths and outsource the weaknesses to an expert in that field. I’m lucky I realised this before the birth of my second daughter as trying to juggle what I was doing previously with another baby in the mix, would have been extremely challenging! I have small ‘fails’ on a daily basis - #mumlife and 'baby brain’ can really escalate a ‘situation’ but seeing the humour in these moments is absolutely essential to carrying on with a smile and being able to turn things around.

I LEARNT THAT YOU CAN’T DO IT ALL, YOU HAVE TO PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS AND OUTSOURCE THE WEAKNESSES

AND WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST BUSINESS HURDLE.
Focusing on the wrong indicators as a sign of success. It is very easy in driving a business through Social Media to get caught up in the ‘likes’.  I had two conversations, unintentionally, about a year ago now with Belinda from @petiteinteriorco and Skye from @ssmarketing and both said the same thing that truly resonated with me - ‘don’t focus on the likes, focus on driving sales’. While the two things are not mutually exclusive, recognising that one does not necessarily equal another helped me to form a strong brand strategy and really start driving that forward.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING A SMALL BUSINESS.
Find your ‘you’ that sets you apart and go for it. Be genuine, be unique and put framework in place to help you cope. A lot of people naturally assume working for yourself from home is fun and easy….it is fun, that is for sure but it takes a lot of hard work. Having the necessary framework in place allows you to not lose the ‘why’ you are doing it.

BE GENUINE, BE UNIQUE

AND WHAT IS PLANNED FOR LITTLE RAE PRINTS FUTURE.
Little Rae Prints is expanding into the wonderful world of wholesale so you will be seeing more of us in local children’s boutiques. The art series will continue to expand with a BLUE collection set to launch next week and another BLUSH series in the pipeline. So much messy hand goodness ahead as well of course. We are also working on a styling series and some footage that shows the inspiration and love behind the Little Rae Prints process. We will be showing you around our HQ a lot more.

FAST FIVE.
BIGGEST INSPIRATION.

My children - I am so inspired by the want to harness their imaginations and keep their worlds magical for as long as possible. All of my art sits in that space between reality and dreams and I want to encourage that magic that comes to children so easily.  I am more often than not viewing the world from knee height, looking at what they see. Thinking like a toddler really opens your eyes to the world of (im)possibilities.

WORD THAT MAKES YOU LAUGH.
‘Mumlife'. Its such a great term as it is usually a tongue in cheek descriptor of the reason why something has just gone terribly wrong.  We have to make light of frustrating situations.

WORD THAT MAKES YOU CRINGE.
‘Finishhhhheeeddddd’ – it is my calling to wipe a certain two year olds behind after a long stint in the bathroom.

PET PEEVE.
My two year old daughter has taken a liking to calling me by my first name! Let me be ‘Mummy’ please, its my favourite role.

FREAK OUT.
Time…..Where. Does. It. Go?!
