GIRLS FROM THE GO
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT GIRLS FROM THE GO.
Girls from the Go is a support group for Women in business in Bendigo and surrounds. It kind of started as a hashtag actually, and then I saw the opportunity to take the natural progression and move it into a Facebook group and Instagram page. The hashtag started when I realised that a lot of my clients were connected in some way, whether it be through me, or mutual friends.
I was already an active member of some similar Facebook groups, but I wanted to create something more localised, and also something that was all inclusive (Eg: Don’t have to be a working Mum) for my new business friends, and that’s how GFTG was born!
I have only been running the group for a few months, and the Instagram was started last week and already showing lots of promise, so I’m excited that I could create a network for Women in Bendigo, and a support group for our local biz babes.
AND TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS.
I own and operate my own photography business (Leah Ladson Photography & Design). I photograph all sorts of rad things and totally love it. I have been in business for almost 8 years, but I was really just shooting weddings and families up until last year. I had been toying with the idea of product and commercial photography for a long time, and after attending The Digital Picnic ‘Get Social Savvy’ workshop, I was inspired to give it a shot.
It has now become the driving force of my business, and my client base has grown so quickly and I am working with wonderful businesses all over Australia now. Working for myself is hard work, as I am a WAHM and am endlessly trying to find that elusive thing they call balance, but with hard work I am reaping the rewards of a successful business owner and a Mum who gets to hang out with her kids while they are still young (1 and 4 years old).

THROUGHOUT YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT SO FAR.
Learning how to say ‘No’ and learning what my worth is. I know we all start somewhere, but the main part of why I do what I do is because I love it and am extremely passionate about it. So if someone can’t afford the investment, I really struggle with that because I feel like photography is such a beautiful gift that everyone should have the chance to enjoy at least once.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE STARTING A SMALL BUSINESS.
Know your ‘why’ and find your people. If you know your why, any speed humps along the way, you can refer back to this and remember why you are doing this. It gives you and your business it’s purpose, and it will be your point of difference too. Find your people, a like-minded person/mentor, or a group of people who you can bounce ideas off, ask for advice and who can relate when you’re having a bad day.
AND WHAT IS PLANNED NEXT FOR THE GIRLS FROM THE GO.
I honestly have no idea! It is a beautiful group of women who I enjoy very much being connected to. We are often adding new members, and hope that our founding members can have a positive influence on other business babes in need of some support.
GET YOUR STALK ON.
My Mumma. She is the nicest, kindest person you will ever meet. She has sacrificed a lot for me and my siblings, and continues to do so. We never have to ask for anything, she always knows what we need and makes sure we have it. I actually nominated her for Bernado’s Mother of the Year last year, because she is truly exceptional.
WORD THAT MAKES YOU LAUGH.
When my 4 year old says Jor-Ni-Mus (meaning Ginormous).
WORD THAT MAKES YOU CRINGE.
Moist. Eww. Can’t believe I wrote that.
Interrupters, and people who don’t listen.
TOP FIVE TO FOLLOW.
Ok, so I’ve already bragged about the talent in Bendigo, so I going to share some love for some outsiders!
She is all for supporting others, especially Mum’s and I love that. Plus Jade is so lovely.
I love Gemma’s feed and all her beautiful handmade, personalised products. I am a long time fan and customer, and have loved watching their growth and success.
Kate’s store had *the* best iconic Aussie gifts without being souvineer-y. Her feed is beautifuland I could honestly buy everything in store.
I started in Wedding Photography, and it is still a huge part of my business, so I LOVE all the beautiful wedding goodness they post.
Purely in an aesthetic sense, I love the colours and theme of Ruth’s feed. Very minimalist and has a scandi feel. Very talented flat-layer!
