Maypole Design creates beautiful and unique handmade jewellery and home accessories that are just a little bit different. They are an online based business who also wholesale to retail shops worldwide. All products are hand made to the highest quality. And with lots of love.
Maisie is the owner behind the business. She is a super-talented-super-sweet-super-inspiring 16 year old living in Adelaide, Australia. Yup. We said 16. She is one of our favourite movers, makers and shakers. And definitely one to watch.
WHAT MADE YOU START UP MAYPOLE DESIGN?
In 2012, with a little bit of help from my sister Polly, I started my online business called Maypole Design. I started Maypole firstly just as a hobby, as something to keep me occupied in the school holidays, and never dreamed of it becoming so popular.
I have always been creative, so I guess Maypole comes naturally and that is probably why I find it so fun and love doing what I do! I started off by creating a few rope based jewellery pieces, and selling them through the online market place Etsy. Since starting I have increased my product range widely and now design and make rope based jewellery and accessories, clay bowls, and wall hangings.
I sell my products through Etsy, my online store and I wholesale to shops all over the world. I have also written an eBook for teenagers called “How to build an online business while still at school”.
AND HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU FIRST VENTURED IN THE WORLD OF BUSINESS?
I was 12, in Year 7.
AND WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM?
It is a pretty boring story but the name is just a combination of my sister’s and my name - Maisie + Polly = Maypole!!
HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO JUGGLE YOUR BUSINESS AND SCHOOL LIFE?
With much organisation! I am a list person, I have a list for all the lists I need to make! I try to dedicate my weekends to make all orders, and 15 minutes each night to replying to emails. I also do sport almost everyday of the week so it is quite a juggle trying to get all my school and Maypole work done, as well as hanging out with my friends and family, but I think I have a great balance. I wouldn't change a thing even if I could.
WE TOTALLY LOVE YOUR WORK. EVERY SINGLE PIECE. CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PRODUCTS AND OVERALL STYLE?
Thank you so much! My products are unique from anything else, with a little bit of a scandi/boho/minimalistic vibe, I think there is something for everyone which is why it is so hard to pick just one style!
THROUGHOUT YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT?
Probably that Maypole is meant to be something fun, not stressful, and I need to remember that when I start feeling overwhelmed with orders. Also at first I was embarrassed about what people would think about me being so young and having my business, and I worried that they wouldn't take me seriously. Learning that age isn't something to stop anyone from doing something they love is one of the biggest hurdles I have had to get over.
ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE THINKING OF STARTING UP A SMALL BUSINESS?
Make sure you have the commitment and motivation to keep going even when it gets tough, because it is way easier to quit than it is to keep going, and there are so so many rewards that come from sticking with your ideas. And remember to just go for it, be original and have fun!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE BITS FROM YOUR OWN RANGE?
This is such a tough question! I create pieces that I love, so I am obsessed with everything! At the moment though I am loving our Tassel Necklaces. I love how they can be layered with other necklaces to create such a unique and gorgeous addition to any outfit.
AND WHAT IS NEXT FOR MAYPOLE DESIGNS?
For the long term future/goals for Maypole I am just going to wait and see what the business brings! But there may be a few exciting things happening behind the scenes too, all will be revealed soon!

I can’t wink with my left eye, which may sound normal, but a few months ago someone (*cough mum) decided that I needed to go to see the doctor about it. The doctor laughed at me when I told her why I was there!!
I hate surprises. To the extreme that I have to look up the endings of all books, movies and tv shows.

I love the beach and wish I lived across the road again like I did when I was younger!
