LAUREN SMALLFIELD CREATES
We can not believe we haven’t found Lauren Smallfield Creates awesome work before now. We honestly love every single thing in store. Uh huh. Leather Rosettes. Embroidery. Artwork. Prints. Illustrations. Linen. Could we just order one of everything please? Maybe two of everything?
WHAT MADE YOU START UP YOUR BUSINESS, LAUREN SMALLFIELD CREATES.
Pure sanity if I’m honest. I have always been a creative person and it definitely sends me crazy if I don’t have a project on the go. Having studied at the International School of Colour and Design coming up with textile designs and room art was a natural way to explore my creative urges.
As a stay-at-home mum I started designing and making things then putting them online. The business has now expanded to where I am working with suppliers in Australia. While LSC is still on a small scale, it is very much a business.
WE LOVE YOUR WORK. CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PRODUCTS.
I like to think others see my work as simple, bright and fun. I love creating a whole range of different things and working with a wide range of mediums and textures. I don’t get bored as I’m always exploring new ideas and ways of interpreting ‘old’ ones - such as the leather rosettes. It keeps things unique.
WE LOVE EVERYTHING YOU DO. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE.
At the moment it would have to be my hand printed flower screen prints. I love the whole process of making them - from choosing colours, the composition and the printing. I’m lucky because I have been able to set up the printing from home while binge watching Netflix into the night. I’m in my happy place while printing!
THROUGHOUT YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT SO FAR IS.
Don’t listen to that little voice in your head! I’m not sure if anyone doesn’t have that little voice...always back yourself, trust your instincts and go for it.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING A SMALL BUSINESS.
Don’t wait for the perfect time...it won’t come. Get started, even if it is just in a small way and build your business from there. The lessons you learn along the way are far more valuable than anything you’ll learn from the research you do while you’re waiting.
My other advice would be to get good people around you. Those you trust to give you creative feedback and those you trust to give you business guidance. You need both and I am constantly amazed by the support, knowledge and assistance I get from mentors. You also need a supportive family - none of this would be possible if my partner wasn’t backing me.
WHAT IS PLANNED FOR LAUREN SMALLFIELD CREATES FUTURE.
I love selling online and my work has already gone as far afield as the UK and USA. I recently attended my first market and while I enjoyed the direct interaction with customers it is very much a local focus. I would really like to get a couple of quality retail outlets so I can sell some selected lines on a more commercial scale across Australia and further afield if possible.
