We love a bit of kids craft. And some DIY. And we think the team at CRAFTD are just fabulous. We had a quick chat with them about where it all began and their favourite DIY's to keep the kids entertained.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT, CRAFTD.
CRAFTD run innovative creative workshops for kids around the UK. From sushi rolls made out of sweets, to 3D dinosaur puzzles, we try our best to ensure our workshops are always unique and engaging! Our workshops are structured to encourage not only creative thinking, but the use of patience, team work and often a little math and science! We also run a blog where we share easy DIY ideas that anyone can make no matter where in the world they are.
We’re lucky to typically run our workshops in collaboration with amazing venues like The Hoxton Hotel or Soho House in Central London, but we also get involved in many corporate events, from press day’s to charity auctions.
What started off just as a passion project of mine, has now quickly grown into a well-recognised and highly-regarded child activity provider. My partner, Paulius, is my right hand and my two work shop coordinators, Laura and Victoria, are amazing. We’re all super excited for what the future holds!
WHAT MADE YOU START UP YOUR BUSINESS.
CRAFTD started as a passion project to bring creative learning back into childhood. Sadly, it seems to be getting increasingly squeezed out of childhood. From results-focused education, time poor parents, and easy distractions like TV and iPads, the opportunity for children to explore, discover and develop through creative activities is diminishing.
I strongly believe that children benefit from fun, hands-on activities that inspire their imagination and nurture their natural curiosity and potential. Creative and curious kids grow into clever kids (hence our slogan!). It is these fundamental skills learnt as a child that help promote a happy and healthy life.
So while the timeless creative basics were there, craft needed a fresh new look. Something that would reinvigorate young parents’ interest and encourage them to get their children involved in the creative-learning process once more. And that’s how the concept of CRAFTD was born!
AND WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURTIE DIY'S AT THE MOMENT. WE CAN'T PICK A FAVOURITE.
I’m currently obsessed with the idea of DIY piñatas! Definitely a fun summer project to undertake with the kids (lots of cutting and gluing!). Oh Happy Day has some absolutely fabulous ones on her blog that we will be trying out this summer for Cai’s birthday.
THROUGHOUT YOUR BUSINESS BLOGGIN' JOURNEY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT IS.
Apart from the fact that some days it is extremely difficult to find the time or the motivation for blogging while juggling a business, a full time job and a family (!), I’ve learnt that it really is one of the best ways to engage with your target audience. So if you’re wondering whether blogging is worth it – yes, it is definitely worth clearing time in your schedule for! There’s only so much you can write/so many individual photos you can post on Twitter and Instagram. I’ve found blogging is less restrictive and gives me so much more creative freedom.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING A BLOG.
Don’t be intimidated or overwhelmed. There are so many great (free!) resources out there to help you get started making your fantastic blog. From providers of free website templates (like Wix and WordPress), to YouTube tutorials, and even to other blogs. Everything you need to know about creating and running an effective blog is out there and readily available. You just have to get started!
WHAT IS PLANNED FOR CRAFTD'S FUTURE.
The future is exciting and we’re just riding the wave! I’m currently working on a set of hands-on creativity kits with my one of my best friends (I’m fortunate that is an amazing designer)! She’s based in Dubai so unfortunately the distance adds a level of complexity but we’re hoping to launch them in early 2017. We’ve also been approached to write a modern craft book, which was a huge surprise! It’s still early days though. And of course, we’re hoping to continue to roll out many new and exciting workshops!!
