FRIDAY & TODAY
As you may already know, here at Captain + Co. we love a little bit of colour. Uh huh. And when we first saw these beauties from Friday & Today, it was love at first sight.
Colour. Style. Design. Print perfection. We love them all. And we were lucky enough to have a chat to Jacqui, the talented, inspiring, beautiful lady behind the beautiful brand.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS FRIDAY & TODAY.
We design and sell refined, contemporary posters for both children’s and other living spaces that combine great graphic design with a delicacy in colour and form that makes them very suited to people’s home. Ready to hang.
WHAT MADE YOU START UP YOUR BUSINESS.
In my career as a graphic designer, I have been working with leading studios in London and Melbourne for fantastic clients such as Stella McCartney, Dior, YSL and Yauatcha (a totally amazing restaurant in Soho, London). I really enjoy creating a delicate, sophisticated experience around the packaging and presentation of my client’s products.
Friday & Today started from the idea of taking these kinds of experiences and making them available to everyone, at an affordable price, in their own homes. I have chosen posters as my starting point, as they are relatively inexpensive and can have an amazingly positive impact on a space, but we will be expanding into other fields and products.
WE LOVE YOUR WORK.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PRODUCTS.
Thank you! Our work is about creating positive, inspiring experiences with our posters. Moments of beauty that lighten up the spaces you live in. The refined colours and patterns can shine a new and fresh light on the way you perceive everything else in a space.
We are working on a collection of posters with particular rooms and atmospheres in mind, from the kitchen and the living room to the big and the little people’s bedrooms. At the moment I am working on a poster that will pair beautifully with Fifteen Lemons. Their lightheartedness and their subject makes them particularly suited to kitchens and children’s bedrooms – although I have to confess that I really enjoy having Fifteen Lemons in a white washed oak frame in my own bedroom.
The series after that will be more restrained and minimal in palette and will probably be more suited to ‘grown up’ spaces, such as the living room or your own bedroom. We also have some more beautiful and iconic posters for little ones in development Saskia (7) and Louis (6) (my children) give us lots of feedback and advice in this area!
AND WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM.
We want to inspire and bring on a bright outlook. Put a bit of that Friday feeling in every day.
WE KNOW YOU HAVE JUST STARTED YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY, BUT WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT SO FAR IS.
That’s a great question! My biggest lesson so far has been to trust my instincts and to believe in myself. It is invaluable to listen and to be open-minded, to fully understand how other people perceive and value your product. It allows you to improve and to be relevant. But at the same time, you have to trust your own skills and judgment. Creating something new is about connecting to the world around you with your inner thoughts to ensure you have something positive to add.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING A SMALL BUSINESS.
As the song goes by Carol King, you’ve got to get up every morning with a smile on your face and show the world all the love in your heart.’
WHERE CAN WE PURCHASE YOUR PRINTS FROM.
