LIVING A LOW TOX LIFE
My journey towards a low toxin lifestyle really began 11 years ago when I was diagnosed with relapsing remitting Multiple Sclerosis. My doctor said “Hay Jane, you can have these injections every day, they will suppress you immune system so it will stop attacking your nerves! Oh by the way, because your immune system is suppressed you’ll get sick all the time”.
I said “No thanks”
He said “In 10 years time you’ll have a 50% chance of developing full blown MS, where you’ll gradually decline, end up in a wheelchair and someone else will have to wipe your but!”
I said “No thanks!”
And so began my research into how I could bring my body back to a state of health. I immersed myself in podcasts, books and Dr Google. I often joke that I have a PhD in podcasts! I now have 3 boys of my own, and being symptom free (not without many ups and downs along the way) I have naturally turned to be their saviours- after all, prevention is better than cure!
Some statistics that I’ve horrifyingly found include:
- 1 in 3 children suffer from allergies
- 1 in 4 children have asthma
- 1 in 10 children have ADHD
- 1 in 100 have autism and that childhood cancer, diabetes, obesity and depression have each more than doubled in the last two decades. HOLY CRAP! Do you think that perhaps we are doing something wrong?
Certain people would have you believe that it is immunisations that are causing the rise in autism or that it’s the rise in caesarean sections causing allergies. Did you know that wheat causes depression and its sugar or heavy use of plastic responsible for obesity? Hmm- my bet is that it’s not one thing that is causing these problems- it’s everything! We all have a certain amount of room in our cup, some less than others and once that cup overflows- bam! You’ll get hit at your weakest link.
I love to inspire other Mums to reduce the toxic load in their family’s lives and avoid their cups from overflowing. One of my mantra’s is: “If you knew better, you’d do better”
So let’s know! Here is a list of some of the changes I have made to our habits; you might like to work on one at a time. Many small steps in the right direction make for big change!
Reduce plastics. The chemicals used in plastic are hormone disruptors and have been linked to cancers, obesity and behavioural problems. Reducing plastic food storage is probably top of my list. Deep in my research I discovered the neuro-toxins that are present in many children’s plastic toys. Young children are especially at risk as they tend to put everything in their mouths and their brains are developing rapidly at this age. So my love of wooden toys became a business, first hiring wooden toys and now selling them Australia wide.
Buy unprocessed foods as close to nature as possible. When buying packaged foods looks for the least amount of ingredientsand avoid numbers as these are made in a laboratory.
Buy as much Organic produce as possible. Our bodies are extremely clever- if you put a chemical in it, it does not recognise it and if not eliminated through natural ‘pathways’ it will store it in your fat tissue to stop it circulating round the body.
Use chemical free cleaners and avoid anything anti-bacterial. Why? Because it also kills the good bacteria in your gut, needed for well, almost everything! I know that my 13 month old crawls around the floor eating all the crumbs off it and I wouldn’t want him ingesting an ant-bacterial or chemical laden floor wash.
Use natural beauty products. A woman puts on around 500 chemicals per day on her skin. Even the word ‘fragrance’ on a product can contain up to 1000 different chemicals that can absorb into the bloodstream.
Buy a water filter. Our water supply contains chemicals, naturally from runoff from crops, gardens etc but also added to kill the bad bacteria. I guess that’s a good thing but is it good for our gut bacteria? Not to mention Fluoride that is added. The world health organization states that there is no difference in tooth decay in countries that do or don’t fluoridate their water! The fluoride added is the chemical version and is a hormone disruptor. Many European countries have banned water fluoridation.
Don’t beat yourself up.
Just move in the right direction at a pace that feels comfortable.
In a laboratory they have found that the one thing that affects a cell’s DNA the worst is...
Drum roll please.................
A negative thought!
