FIGLIA & MADRE
With babe one, we searched and searched. And searched... the perfect maternity bag. It had to be stylish. It had to be luxe. It had to be a 'nappy bag' in disguise. And finally. Almost three years on. Two babes later. We have found her. Uh huh. Figlia & Madre have released the most beautiful bag. Clean lines. Soft Napa Leather. Compartments. And all the babe essentials. Designed in Melbourne. Crafted in Bali. Pure perfection.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS, FIGLIA & MADRE.
I launched the business in May this year (we are very new business!) I design the bags in Melbourne and they are crafted in Bali, using premium leather. Figlia & Madre offer a range of timeless and sophisticated maternity bags that are designed to long outlast your baby’s time in nappies.
WHAT MADE YOU START UP YOUR BUSINESS.
In a previous life I worked as a women’s ware buyer. My time in retail was fantastic, I loved the travel and the ever changing environment of fashion but after becoming a mum (clichéd as it sounds) I knew I couldn’t commit to a full time buying job. Being my own boss and starting my own business was always a pipe dream. After searching high and low for a stylish nappy bag that I wanted to take beyond the park/parent group Figlia & Madre was born.
AND WHERE DID THE NAEM COME FROM.
Figlia & Madre (meaning daughter & mother in Italian) started due to the birth of my first daughter and basically it’s a nod to that and the fact I love Italian culture (family, passion, food and wine!)
FOR THOSE OF US NOT FLUENT, COULD YOU TEACH US HOW TO PRONOUNCE IT.
I’m really no expert in Italian (I’d love to be…on my list for retirement).
FI(G)LIA (just drop the G when you pronounce) & MAH-DREH (rolling your R’s helps!)
HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO JUGGLE YOUR BUSINESS AND MUM LIFE.
The business really was a slow burn to begin with after I came up with the idea I spent many nap times and evenings doing research on design and manufacturers that would be interested in helping me out…when bub number two arrived that went out the window for quite some time (not much juggling there…just pure sleep deprivation and survival).
This year I’ve been very fortunate to have family support and I’ve been able to dedicate two days a week to the business (amazing what you can do when you don’t have two little toddlers underfoot!). In an ideal world I’d love a studio space to escape to!
WE LOVE YOUR WORK. YOUR BAGS ARE JUST DIVINE. CAN YOU DESCRIBE THEM.
Why thank you! The Figlia & Madre Essential Tote is about timeless and simple design using quality materials. They’re designed to long outlast your baby’s time in nappies.
When a little person comes into your life you can be so overwhelmed with choice – the Figlia & Madre tote is designed to hopefully simplify a Mum’s life. The essentials being a padded change matt (that is wipe clean), insulated bottle holder to keep milk warm or possibly food for later on in life. A large deep interior zip pocket to hide things little fingers can’t get to…and two bottle holders for mum and bub to avoid those nasty spills (these can ruin an outing!).
Adjustable self-leather body strap to enable you to be hands free (basically all the time with little ones) and self-leather pram straps. A small exterior pocket for easy access to keys and phone. All hidden away in a gorgeous Napa leather tote!
WE KNOW YOU HAVE JUST STARTED YOUR BUSINESS, BUT WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT SO FAR IS.
I guess for me finding a manufacturer that would be happy to make small quantities of goods was a big lesson! I spent a lot of time sending emails that came to dead ends. If you are not making your goods I suggest the best way to get business done is head to manufacturing trade fairs or known countries that specialize in manufacturing (not always easy I know or financially viable). For me this was vital in finding the right manufacturer in person and building a strong relationship.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING A SMALL BUSINESS.
I’d say just go for it! If you believe in an idea bring it to life (I think sometimes you can over think it and that’s when self doubt creeps in). It’s so rewarding when you reach milestones like when designs are brought to life and a website is born. Also, build a little community of people with different skill sets that can be your go to for advice on financial/creative/marketing /media…I’ve been amazed how much people love to share and help out (this is really important when you’re going solo and have no one to bounce ideas off).
AND WHAT IS PLANNED FOR FIGLIA & MADRE'S FUTURE.
We’ve started from very humble beginnings and would love to see the little business grow. Firstly, there are many more bag designs in development and down the track we’d love to partner with other brands to curate very special gift bags for the new mum.
