BLOSSOM & GLOW

We first found Blossom & Glow when we had number two on board. And we loved everything. And we still do. Especially the super amazing and super lovely lady behind the brand. We were lucky enough to have a chat to Kathryn and find out a little more about the lady. The brand. The business.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS, BLOSSOM & GLOW.
My journey to creating Blossom & Glow began during my two pregnancies. I envisaged wearing stylish maternity pieces that would see me through pregnancy and breastfeeding. Alas it was not meant to be – I could not find a thing that I liked that wasn’t exorbitantly priced, and I wore clothing that was a couple of sizes too big and stretched my everyday clothes over my bump.  Suffering from severe morning sickness, I felt horrendous all day, every day, and wearing uncomfortable clothing just made things worse!

‘I WORE CLOTHING THAT WAS A COUPLE OF SIZES TOO BIG AND STRETCHED MY EVERYDAY CLOTHES OVER MY BUMP’

The second time around, I wore boring basics purchased online as the thought of scouring shops for stylish maternity wear with a two year old in tow, and being horribly sick again, just wasn’t appealing at all (funny that!).

When the time came for breastfeeding attire with my second son, I was disappointed again (and really frustrated too!). I wanted to avoid the typical cross-over feeding tees and went on the hunt to find stylish tops where I could look good (and not pregnant!), feed anywhere and everywhere (as you do with a second baby), and feel comfortable. All whilst adjusting to my new post-baby body!  Who would have thought that would be such a hard find?!

And that’s when my third baby, Blossom & Glow was born!  I love this business so much!  It has allowed me to connect to some incredible women, as well as giving me the flexibility to be at home with my boys.

AND WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM.
It’s my aim to make women “blossom” during pregnancy, and “glow” during motherhood!  We all know how hard pregnancy, and motherhood is, if I can somehow help women feel a little bit better about themselves during this amazing time, then I have done my job!

HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO JUGGLE BUSINESS LIFE AND MUM LIFE?
I’m not going to lie, I struggle with this every single day. I REALLY try, where possible, not to work while I am at home with the boys.  At the moment, I get up before the boys do to answer emails, wrap parcels, etc. and then I’m back to it at night!  I figure that my life will only be chaotic for such a short amount of time while the boys are so little - there will be plenty of time for me to catch up on sleep in a few years!

WE LOVE YOUR MATERNITY RANGE, AND WE KNOW YOU DO MORE THAN JUST MATERNITY. CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RANGES AND OVERALL STYLE.
I started this business with a focus on maternity wear, however my customers were so happy with their purchases, they wanted more! And that’s when the “post-baby” range was born!

I completely understand that women find it difficult to spend money on themselves, especially once baby arrives!  I aim for my pieces to be affordable, long wearing, good quality, and most importantly, I want women to feel good in them!

My style is quite casual – I love knits, stripes and distressed denim! The pieces you will see at B&G are designed to take you from the park, to out for lunch with the girls (if you’re so lucky!). I completely understand the need for jeans to stay up while you’re pushing kids on the swing, for lumps and bumps to be covered during pregnancy, and for easy access during breastfeeding.  I’ve been there, and done it, I get it!

‘I THINK IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT TO KEEP THINGSIN PERSPECTIVE TOO. I LOVE MY BUSINESS, BUT I LOVE MY FAMILY MORE’

THROUGHOUT YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT IS.
I have learnt so many important lessons during this journey. The one thing that I forgot to do at the start was to take time for me. I stopped exercising because “I didn’t have time”, I stayed up WAY too late because “I had to work”, I gave up my weekends because “I had too much to do”.  I lost sight as to why I started this business. I saw an amazing business coach who was able to put me back on the right path, and that was honestly the best thing I could have done! I think it’s really important to keep things in perspective too. I love my business, but I LOVE my family so much more…

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING A SMALL BUSINESS.
Following on from the above, my best piece of advice to anyone starting a new business, or just for life in general, is to be kind to yourself.  It’s so easy to get caught up in feeling guilty for working, for not working, for not succeeding, for not having time, etc. but it’s so important to take care of YOU.

‘BE KIND TO YOURSELF’

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PIECES FROM YOUR OWN RANGE.
Oh my gosh – what a question!  For our pregnant mummas, I cannot go past the Isla Jeggings.  They are comfortable, right on trend, and super affordable being under $100. Most women who buy a pair end up coming back for the other colour!

For our breastfeeding mums, my fave pieces are the nursing basics.  I love that you can layer them, and that they provide discreet breastfeeding access.  My second son fed anywhere and everywhere, so I loved that I could feel comfortable feeding out and about.  I had a world of trouble feeding my first son, so to be able to feed my second made me so happy! The fact that I could feel comfortable doing so was an added bonus!

For our post baby mums, I’m loving the Frankie Scoop Neck Jumper.  It’s SO cosy, easy to wear, and can be worn casually or dressed up!

AND WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME WHO IS A LITTLE ON THE ROUNDER SIDE, TIME POOR AND FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE LOST ALL THEIR 'STYLE' AFTER HAVING BABES.
Oh I so know that feeling!  The Havana Skinny Leg Jeans and Blake Skinny Jeans are my two favourites at the moment.  They are mid rise, so hold you in, and eliminate the muffin top – LOVE that!  As a general rule, if you’re wearing fitted pants, then go with a loose top, so I would team these with any of our basic tees.  The basics are loose fitting and VERY flattering for all shapes and sizes.   I’d then pop on a cardi – my fave at the moment is the Willow Hooded Cardi. I cannot get enough of layering!

AND WHAT IS PLANNED FOR BLOSSOM & GLOW'S FUTURE
Blossom & Glow will continue to provide gorgeous clothing for women during motherhood! I absolutely love supporting other mothers in business, so you will see more local maternity and post-baby wear becoming available.

I am also collaborating with some amazing women to show support to other mothers (I can’t give too much away at this stage, but it’s very exciting); have some fabulous giveaways coming up.
