HAPPY LITTLE TENANT

We love a bit of style. Ok. We love a lot of style. And we are always thrilled to see a little something of ours hanging in a beautifully styled room. Hanging with some of the best. One of our favourite stylists is Happy Little Tenant. After more than a decade in the making Justine made her dream happen. And here she is. Mama to two gorgeous children, wife to a wonderful man and a super styling stylist.

With both a  Diploma of Interior Decoration and Advanced Diploma of Interior Design and working as an in-store and in-home Decorating Consultant for Freedom, she really knows her stuff. Taking a break to have a family, she is now back doing what she loves and what she is passionate about. Designing Interior spaces. She is rocking her own business and we adore watching her journey. And dreaming of spaces as beautiful as the ones she creates.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE STYLING BUSINESS.
I am a qualified Interior Designer and Decorator, and have worked in many different facets of the industry – from Commercial Interior & Spatial Design, to the in home Decorator at Freedom Furniture. I started officially earning an income for my work around 2004 I think?! I started Happy Little Tenant at the beginning of 2015 and really got into styling then, officially. I guess I have sort of been doing this my whole life though, in one-way or another!

AND WHAT MADE YOU MAKE THE DECISION TO BECOME A STYLIST.
Friends and peers have always been very supportive and encouraging, and so one day I finally decided to take the plunge – it seemed like the natural progression after children, so far its working out, phew!

WHAT ARE THE BEST LESSONS YOU HAVE LEARNT ALONG THE WAY.
It is all so subjective, what one person adores another person can detest! But if you keep the basic principles and elements of design in mind that’s usually a good platform to start from. And remember, you have to live in your house – no one else, so design it for you!

FAVOURITE STYLE AT THE MOMENT.
Scandi. Who doesn’t love it at the moment though! Simple, natural, pale timber with muted monotone hues! I try to take my own path, because trends and fashion are forever changing so if I can add my own style in there then I won’t want to change everything so ofter, well that’s the theory anyway!

WHAT WOULD THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES US NON-STYLING PEOPLE MAKE WHEN 'STYLING' AT HOME.
The easiest mistake to make is often having too much! A good rule of them is to step back once you set up your space and then take a few things away. Keeping it simple allows for life, try to remember you usually have to live in these spaces.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION AND KEEP IT FRESH.
Social media is a great source of inspiration, but it can be a slippery slope. I try to keep my eyes open to whats around me. I check out the shops I love regularly to see whats new and always have a mountain of magazines to look through when in need of some inspiration.

ANY PROJECTS YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF.
My own home extension, it was a monster task, and we did that while I was pregnant with our first child – what were we thinking?! But in the end we converted a very small, simple 3 bedroom house into our current 4 bedroom home with ample open-plan living space and storage.

I also loved doing a recent HLT first anniversary giveway, #winaroomredo! It was great to be able to create a beautiful space for a gorgeous little boy, with so many wonderful brands on board.

WHAT IS YOUR HOME STYLE.
Forever evolving! Haha. Monotone, warm, inviting, fresh, Scandi, full of life, fun, modern – it really depends on the day though. Sometimes chaotic!
