OH NO YOU DINNIT. COPYCATS. PART ONE
Heck. Dang. Copying. It is a total grey area. With blurred lines. And loads of question marks. But how many of you have had a 'Holy-shit-balls-I've-been-copied-feck-feckity-feck' moment?
Whether you are a maker. A mover. A shaker. A blogger. You have more than likely been 'copied'. Or at least 'imitated'. Yup. It sucks.
Alas. It happen a lot. And we have been seeing a lot of it lately. We cringe when we see a 'copy'. We cringe at some of the reactions. We double cringe when people publicly shout out about it. And we hang our heads and tut tut when people name and shame said copiers to the whole wide social media world.
Yes we all want to jump up and down and shout shout let it all out. Loose our shizzle. Point fingers. Uh huh. We have been there. We have done that. But it didn't make us feel any better. It didn't make us look any better. And worse... it almost forced people to take sides. To pity us. To hate on them. Or vice versa. Hate on you for hatin' on them. Ugh.
It is so hard to one hundred percent say 'hey-you-I-did-that-first-you-copied-me-and-no-one-can-ever-make-say-blog-anything-remotely-the-same-ever'.
There is so much same same but different out there. The market is flooded. Flooded with awesome... but so much awesome can mean overlap. And copycats. Either way, if you feel like you have been copied... it's never a nice feeling. It's a bit shit. Actually it's a lot shit.
Here is a snapshot of our copycat experience...
The First Time.
We totally lost the plot. We cried. We raged. We cried. We posted. Oh yes. We went there. We posted. Sigh. We never actually named and shamed. Phew. But we still pointed a finger. We still said it out loud. We still shared it. Shame on us.
The Second Time.
Same as above.
The Third Time.
Kinda the same as above above but a little less dramatic.
The Fourth Time.
We vented to a fellow business mama. Then she made us see the light. She had been copied soooo many times. She had been there waaay more than we had. And she dealt with it like a superstar. Cool. Calm. Collected.
The Fifth to Fiftieth Time.
Not going to lie.... it was like a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Happy. Sad. Mad. Hysterical. With laughter. Hysterical. With tears. Just plain hysterical. But then we really stopped. Took a step back. Calmed our farm. And thought... had we been 'copied' or was it just similar and we were really panicking about someone being on 'our' turf. Argh.
We totally roll with it. It still sucks. It still hurts. We still get a little eye twitch when we see it. But it's more like Meh. What can we do? Not much. We don't own poms. We don't own felt. We don't own flags-feathers-arrows-words-stories-feelings. Nope.
Through it all, we have learnt a lot. It has helped us find our strength. Grow some balls. Professional balls. Moral Balls. And to not hold grudges. Well not too many. To let go of the hate. The anger. The ugh feeling.
Hells Bells. We were copied just yesterday. Like complete design-style-colour-errythang copied. No grey areas. No blurred lines. Flat. Out. Copied. And you know what... Meh. Feck Em. We know we do our best to be original. We know there is a lot of same same but different. At least we try to be different. To be original. To be unique. We really do.
And if you are a copycat. Phhffff. Shame on you.
When we 'copied' unintentionally. Oops. Sorry. We share how it felt to be 'sprung' and called out. How we reacted. How we dealt with it. And what we learnt.
When you have totally been shitballs copied, we have a few suggestions on what to do. And how to react. We are no experts... but we have talked to a few people and will share both our thoughts and theirs.
